There are three main factors that must be taken into consideration when assessing which lock or latch should be used in a particular situation:
Describes how the lock operates with respect to the user (domestic and/or commercial buildings).
It is essential to ensure that the lock or latch specified operates correctly over a reasonable lifetime of use and to consider the kind of applications and buildings as well.
It is covered by reference to the performance levels specified within standards BS EN 12209:2003 Mechanically operated locks, latches and locking plates and BS EN 1303:1998 Cylinders for locks and then by relating the usage pattern to the appropriate level within the standard.
Protection is needed for both people and property and to ensure adequate security, consideration needs to be given to :
- A lock and locking plate should have strength at least equal to the door and frame to which it is fitted.
- A lock should have the ability to resist opening by manipulation (e.g. picking).
- A larger number of differs also means the lock is usually more difficult to pick.
